If I Only Had A Brain...

...A second brain that is.

Crocheted from cotton thread. About 3000 yards of bedspread weight cotton thread to be exact.

And teensy weensy little hook. A size 6 steel hook cradled in a hand carved wooden handle courtesy of the hook carver extraordinaire, Jimbo!

Jimbo, your hook enabled me to crochet for many, many hours virtually free of pain. Thank you so much!

And it took numerous hours to work through the filet mesh of this brainy beast of a shawl. A month and a half of evenings dedicated to the mesh, open and closed.

A lot of mesh...

Yeah, it's that big.

And it is done!

My brainical thready opus is finis!

  6. Do you know how much I love you?

In all seriousness, I can never show this to my husband or he will demand that I make one. Of course, I'm already considering this for myself.

  15. The whole thing is crocheted? You didn't do the triangle portion on your loomy thing? wow. That makes it even more amazing.

  16. That is too awesome for words!

And wow the time investment!! I wish I could be as productive as you. As it is, I'm lucky to get 20 rows a night in a simple garter stitch (35 stitches) on a scarf I'm working on.

Never mind the Jolly Roger appliques I started a while back! I want to finish those.

  23. Whoa, that's some brain you've got there. In size 10 crochet cotton?! Madness, woman, sheer and utter madness. But in a good way!

Is this the first in a series of fileted organs? Is the spleen next? Maybe the heart?

    Whoa.

THAT seriously makes me want to try crocheting with thread. I never thought I'd be interested in filet, but that's way cool.

PS- I'm working on your 'grill' placemats from the kooky crochet book, and my husband thinks they're hilarious!

I'm starting to come up with some pattern ideas of my own now, and am excited to start experimenting after I've made all my christmas presents. Thanks for all the inspiration!!

Is there a WHY out here somewhere that I've missed???

This is AWESOME. My husband would totally dig it if I crocheted this for him... I'm thinking - tablecloth... bedspread... something really hugely overwhelming and useful. :) He had a brain tumor back in 2001 and now when we look at the MRI every year to re-scan, you see a big hole where they removed it... We have a laugh each year about that big chunk of his brain missing.

If I could give him a huge brain like this? He'd really love it. Honestly. His online name is HalfBrainBoy. :)

Is there a backstory to why you made it? And can I get a pattern?

  39. Simply amazing! Do you have a pattern for it?
