I gotta tell you all that I was very resistant with regard to joining the sock brigade. Oh, you know, I like to reside outside the proverbial box. Iconoclast to the core. However, me likey this sock knitting thingie! So much so that I am knitting another pair...
Yes, those would be Christmas socks in July.
After I finish my x-mas sockies I'd like to try to knit a pair of toe-up socks. Anyone have a pattern that they fancy that I should try? Simple patterns are just fine. In addition, I will be trying my hand at a few crocheted socks with the hopes that I will be able to design a few of my own based upon what I learn in the process.

Any patterns by Cookie A. are fun to make. Though a warning: As soon as you finish one pair, you want to make them all.

ReplyDeleteSave the Cookie patterns for later. Go with WendyKnits if you want simple and clear directions. She's got several FABULOUS free toe-up patterns. And some are specifically detailed for beginner toe-up knitters.

I'm a huge fan of toe-up. Prefer them over any other kind ... even if my mojo of late is nonexistent.
I can't wait to see what you come up with crochet sock wise... I'm tempted to try socking it too... but not enough to relearn knitting.

ReplyDeleteI just finished a pair of Azure socks from Knitty and I love them! The pattern is so easy but looks so intricate - well written and goes fast. I even did them two at a time!
Yay, another sock knitter joins the ranks! Oh this will be good! I can't wait to see patterns YOU come up with. Socks with eyes? Perhaps chicken feet socks? See thru socks with bones? Whee! The anticipation will keep me watching for sure.

ReplyDeleteI am experimenting with the crochet sock thing, but I know for sure if you have a sock pattern for crochet, I would want it! Love these socks, by the way. Great job. Maybe someday I will venture into knitting. but for now, I shall continue crocheting... :) Looking forward to the sock patterns...

1. one exception to turtlegirl76's suggestion to wait on the cookie a. patterns. sometime when you want to knit a pair of top-down socks, give monkey a spin. free @ knitty.com.
ReplyDelete2. i just heard that there's a brilliant provisional cast-on for toe-up socks at knitty. by: wendy of wendyknits -- suggested by turtlegirl76. i'm going to try it soon myself.
3. i totally recommend working on two socks at once, in parallel. not alternating rows, though. alternating chunks. cuff1, cuff2, leg1, leg2, etc. if you do each chunk in quick succession, you don't risk forgetting any changes you might have made along the way, and/or forgetting what your notes meant. it keeps both pretty identical. (i started doing it this way after my pair #1 -- for one reason: "graft1, graft2 - DONE!" Woo!)
