My Very First Sock!

At any rate, enough complaining! I'd rather show you my first sock!!

I know, for most of you, sock knitting is definitely old hat. No, old shoe. Oh, whatever! You get my drift. Most of you have been knitting socks forever! However, I just didn’t feel the need to slip my toe into the, um, err, sock, until recently. And by recently, I mean while trying to pack for my business/pleasure trip to Europe where I was having to make decisions such as, second suit or second shawl project (just in case I finish the first)? Really, on this last trip I think I faced the conundrum of “how much yarn is too much yarn in one’s carry-on” head on!

Yeah, so, I figured it was time to make small projects part of my repertoire. I should be more specific. Small projects that are challenging and not necessarily able to be finished in a few hours need to become part of my repertoire. Hence, socks. I may need to throw a few glove projects into the mix here and there as well. Regardless, I will be toting less yarn around from airport to airport. Of this I am sure. Well, I think I’m sure anyway. This actually could mean a carry-on filled with loads of sock yarn!

Anyway, I made a sock. I’m sure that you sock knitters recognize the pattern I am using. Yep, I’m knitting a pair of Jaywalkers! In addition, I am using yarn from my stash which happens to be Sock Garden from Knit Picks. I don’t even think they offer this yarn anymore. It’s got to be a couple of years old. However, I’ve got enough of this colorway to finish the pair, so no worries.

Not bad eh?

I am definitely enjoying the process of making socks. This may even lead to a few sock designs of my own…

And yes, I still owe you all a post about Paris. Stay tuned.

I'm beginning a foray into sock yarn for the first time too.

However, I'm going with fingerless gloves which aren't that different from socks.

It's weird to be knitting on such small needles. Since I'm using bamboo DPNs, I'm paranoid that I'll break them.

So today I finally ordered circulars from Knit Picks to give magic looping a try too.

If you designed some crocheted sock patterns, my heart would explode.

Nice sock! I still have not move on to making a second pair od socks. I think what put me off was the acrylic yarn I used. It pilled horribly where the pants rubbed against the ankle. a big let down after all the time I put into those first socks.

Thanks for dropping by my blog.

Magalion, I have the same problem! I'm working on my first pair of socks and finding that I worry about bending or snapping the needles. Because I leave my work everywhere, I often find myself accidentally stepping or sitting on it, and I think that would be really bad for these small bamboo dipoint needles.

Very nice. I haven't attempted sock knitting yet. That is next on my list - along with attempting lace.

Fabulous! I've haven't managed to make a sock yet so I, for one, am in awe!

I'll patiently wait on your Paris post. I'm wantin' to go there for my 25th wedding anni and would love to get some ideas.

I also am working on a Jaywalker... I'm very impressed you've already finished yours!

I found it a very pleasing knit.

Your sock looks great!!

You are a couple of steps ahead of me. I will hopefully complete my first sock in a few days! I see now why they are so addicting!

I used Paton's grace which is a heavier yarn and 100% mercerized cotton because I was scared that if I spent money on real sock yarn I would end up messing it up. So this was practice to get the basics down.

My first successful sock was a Jaywalker, too! I still have to do that pesky second one, though.

Best of luck on your sock journeys!

Oh, and I would totally buy your sock patterns. I bet they'll be the most awesomest evah.

Well done, great first sock! It's that second one that's the hardest....

Oh lovely! I've never knitted, let alone made a pair of socks. I'm actually curious about crochet socks, but I know that's not near what a knitted sock could be... Great job :)

Wow! Your sock looks fantabulous! I have yet to put my toe in. Scared of one sock-itis and small needles. Plus I'd rather be barefootin'.

Ohhhh! I am so impressed! A Jaywalker too!! I just finished my first pair, and they were...um...interesting...*blushes*

(I put a link to the picture in my ID for this post, just to share my shame with the Interwebs)

I still think I'm addicted to socks now though...*grin*

Well, I must say I feel better about my own failure to venture into sockdom...and inspired to go there soon! Your sock is lovely, can't wait to see the pair of them. And I love working with tiny needles, the knit picks harmony circs are my new favorite toy. You go girl!

Love the sock! They can be addicting to make, so be careful you don't abandon all your other creative endeavours and become a sock addict, like the rest of us!

Love the sock and the colorway. Love knitting socks too. Lately I'm into the fingerless glove thing. Real quick fixes they are.

Looks great!! Be careful - it's addicting - I just learned two at once using magic loop - its not helping my problem...

It is nice that you are into socks as well.I learned that it can be pretty addictive.

Nice looking sock. I would like to be able to knit with needles. My hands shake the yarn off. At least I am able to use looms to make tube like socks. I am slowly becoming addicted to loom knitting socks.
