New Crochet Accessories!

Yeah, not so good.

My right hand is crying out in pain, which is terrible because I have three crochet projects due to publishers soon AND I start teaching crochet classes next weekend. Sucks.

However, looking at this brightens my day...

Too bad I cannot massage my hand with the pages of a book.

Hope all is well with everyone! More later...

I have had this problem over the past few months my self on and off. Usually knitting doesn't bother my hand as much, but crocheting does. Does it hurt the palm of your hand, like burning bad nerve pain that almost feels like a bunch of broken glass in the palm of your hand?

I actually have taken some time off of teaching crochet. I was starting to feel the strain on my hands. (other reasons, too...but that was one of them.)

By the way, I bought the magazine with your skull top pattern. Sierra wants me to make her the top. Every time I see a magazine with your patterns I buy them.

Oh, and I hope the pain goes away, soon. My favorite topical pain reliever is 024. You can buy it at Longs or Rite-Aid and it cost $20 for a spray bottle, but it is the bomb. It works for my hands, back, and any other problems. It's only drawback is the strong menthol/peppermint smell.

I've noticed that if I wear my wrist brace at night it helps more than if I wear it during the day. I hope it feels better soon! I LOOOVE the placemat!

Owww. Oh, I know those pains! You might be able to alleviate some of the pain by loosening up your shoulder and putting ice packs on your shoulder blade as well as on your hand and wrist - pain in the hand and wrist can start at the shoulder. I've been able to relieve hand and wrist pain in some of my clients just by loosening up the shoulder blade. Is your range of motion in the shoulder feeling stiff and limited? Can you roll it around easily? If I were in your area, I'd happily work on you, but I bet there are plenty of good massage therapists in your area - one with training in medical massage could be especially good for what is ailing you right now.

Yeah, crochet can be a real pain sometimes, I wear a wrist brace while I crochet. Sometimes it helps, sometimes my wrist hurts like hell.

I love, love, love the placemat ! Looks like it would be perfect for those fourth of July b-b-q's.

I have that fancy lil wrist brace on right now, my left wrist has been killing me lately!

I find that laying off dairy and wheat helps a little, too.

I know, totally weird, but I'm so used to the bizarre that is me.

so sorry for the pain in your hands !! I stopped knitting in my 20s because my wrists hurted like arthritis or whatever.. It seems bamboo needles help much tho because my wrists are fine now. And alternating hooks and needles seems to help much too

Hope you'll be fine soon though.. and can finish your deadline projects !

Love the placemats btw !! :-)

Ouch--poor Lady Linoleum! Thanks for reminding me though. I've been meaning to start wearing one of those before I start having trouble with my own wrists.

Try taking a day off all the strongly scented things and trying arnica ointment or massage oil. you don't have to believe in Homeopathy to believe in arnica. Best wishes.

Ouch! I, too know that feeling. The anti-inflammatories and rest usually help...you don't crochet when you sleep, do you? lol. Hope you are feeling much better very soon!

Have you tried glucosamine/chondroitin supplements? I know that the major study concluded that g/c therapy didn't help arthritis, but it definitely helps the arthritis in my shoulders.

Wendy - Yes! Palm of hand, splintering pain! I've taken to wearing fingerless gloves on a regular basis. I look like a moron when CIP and the weather is warm, but whatever.

I'm so glad Sierra likes the top! That warms my heart more than you'll ever know.

Oh, and I'm going to pick up some O24.

Vorpal Knitter - I think I need to get a wrist brace too. I have the full palm to forearm thing, but that gets to be a bit much and I don't wear it.

MK - I wish you were here too! Although, must give props to the hubby because he has been working on my shoulders and tendons every night to try and relax the tension.

Soapturtle - Thanks girlie!

Naomi - Getting the wrist brace today!

Megan - Occupational hazard you know? Does it stop me from crocheting? Uh, that would be a big no. I hope your wrist feels better!

Sara - Not weird at all. In fact I have been changing my diet recently and I definitely feel better. I need to go read my labels and see how much wheat I'm inbibing. Good advice. I need to try it.

Sylvie - You know, I don't have any aches and pains from knitting. It's only crochet, which just drives me batty because most of my design work is crochet. I have every I hook made at this point. I was to the point of tears this weekend when I couldn't seem to get comfortable with any hook regardless of material. It sucks girlie. However, I do tend to use wood too. It's softer my palm than metal.

Selena - Take care of your wrists and hands now. You will definitely be thankful later!

Laura - Very good advice. Thank you!

Kay - No I do not crochet when I'm sleeping, but I would if I could. LOL Anti-inflammatories...check.

Lynne - I have not tried that, but I will definitely give it a try!

Thanks all! It's comforting to know that I'm not alone.

On, no! First, this person whose blog I read posted about her hand hurting. Next thing you know, I'm putting up a post about splints and craft-related hand injury because my hand hurts. And now you too. This sucks. Crochet is worse than knitting because of the twisting movement, but the FO's are so worth it!

I really hope you feel better soon!

I hear ya, Sister! I'm waaaaay older than you and have many more aches and pains. Alleve is my best friend.

Which book are the placements in? That is sooooo cool. The photo looks excellent!

Dude. I *so* feel your pain (literally). I have to agree with vorpal and recommend the heavy-duty, steel-insert, velcro-adjustable brace when you go to bed. I got mine from Wally World for about $20 and it works miracles.

And the compression gloves don't look so bad - it's kinda like using 5 metal dpns in public - people think you're doing friggin brain surgery!

hi ladylinoleum, I hope your hand feels better. I know that pain myself. *sigh*
on a different note, your work always amazes me! I'm trying to find the link to where you are published.....

Might I recommend my sovereign remedy for what ails ya?

Of course, by the time the hand feels better, it may be rather difficult to read a pattern, or crochet in a straight line, but...*grin*

Seriously though, my favorite thing for any aches and pains is my little microwaveable baggie filled with barley...It heats up in two or three minutes, and holds the heat for quite a while, and because of the nature of the contents, it can be molded around any body part...I'm sure Target or Walgreen's or anyplace like that would have them...

I haven't crocheted in a long time and took it up again recently. My wrist was extremely sore - but then I hold the hook like a pencil. When I went to aastanga class I really felt the stretch in my wrist (no it wasn't fun) but by the end of class all was well again. I find even knitting tightness goes after a practice too. ***CV

I feel your pain. Ditto on the Aleve. It works miracles for me. Hope this is a temporary thing. You have too much creativity bursting to get out.

I'm kinda in the same boat, lots of stuff to finish, aching wrist and fingers. I wear a wrist brace at night and during the day when I can. But dang they are ugly, so I crocheted a little wristlet cover!

Regina sometimes I get the same thing inmy wrists and usually what I do is I time my work. When it staarts to hur I rrest for 30 minutes and try it again, and sometimes an hour. The spandex hanf-eze gloves are usually great.

If the pain gets really bad go for ice packs as well.

YOur palcemate is awesome as always. Get better soon, hugs

I highly recommend you get one of those braces for your hand/wrist for carpal tunnel syndrome. I wear one on my dominant, crocheting, hand at night when I go to bed, and it truly does make a difference.

OOooohh! I am a massage therapist, taught by a physical therapist, and if I could do my magic Jeannie thing I would twitch my nose and be right there and massage your poor little arms from your elbows to your fingertips. Then I would start all over again.

Repetitive motion is hard on the hands! Every once in a while I "barrow" my husbands wrist braces. I hope you find something that helps.

I'll add my vote to the food allergy thing, as well as plug for regular acupuncture - it's cured all kinds of pains (including wrist pain) for me.

Me TOO--my left hand by the thumb killing me! GIve MSM cream a try and the powder as well--I think it helps a little. Thanks for this post. I picked up a tone of tips...I love your Knitscene Bag...I am the knitter who has the design on the cover and I just came across you by blog surfing. I admired your bag and her I am on your blog.....FUN STUFF...

Sending good vibes your way! Wish you could just not do anything for a few weeks to relieve the pain. Darn deadlines!
